The great and the good gathered at Elland Road Stadium on Wednesday night to recognise the achievements of young people associated with the Leeds United Foundation. The event was presented by Sky Sports Bryn Law and attended by over 250 people from across the city, to celebrate what young people can achieve through working with the Foundation.

Sky Sports Presenter Bryn Law

Chief Executive of Leeds United, Shaun Harvey, kicked off the proceedings with a very positive speech, explaining how Leeds United support the charitable arm of the club. The winners included Lewis Chappelow as Young Learner of the Year and Nathan Guthrie who picked up the Futsal F1 Award. The Leeds United Girls Centre of Excellence rewarded Hannah Shuttleworth, Olivia Cook, Rebbeca Rayner and Danielle Low for their performances at each age group and there were awards for Jake Richardson and Molly Cawthorne from the Football Development Centre at Boston Spa. The first half was completed by Jordan Parkinson winning the Princes Trust Award.

Guy Roberts – Group Development Director at Ringways Motor Group, Leeds United Ladies Player – Clare Sykes, U15′s Player – Rebecca Rayner and Leeds United Ladies Player – Abi Lee

There followed a most moving collection of songs from Crawshaw Schools adaptation of the Musical Oliver, with the students holding the audience spell bound for almost thirty minutes. Leeds United Foundation Chairman, James McAulay said, “That was not just singing – that was real entertainment of the best quality”.

Singers from Crawshaw School

Players from Leeds United first team turned out to support the second half of the evening with Dominic Poleon and Ryan Hall giving out awards to Javaughn Douglas (IGEN Star player), Steve Allen (Ability Counts), Joe Kenny (Futsal F3 Award) and Gavin Rothery (Community Coach of the Year), but this part of the show was stolen by 5 year old Ben Smithson who told Bryn Law how much he loved playing football and Leeds United!

Ryan Hall, Gavin Rothery and Dominic Poleon

Leigh Bromby collected the Community Player of the Year Award from Dennis Leman of the PFA and told the audience how important The Leeds United Foundation is to him. He told Bryn Law, “It has been a difficult year from me through injury but working in the community with young people like these has helped keep my spirits up and shown me a future pathway in coaching. I am really lucky to have had a career in football and I have really enjoyed working with young people through the Foundation”.

Ryan Hall, Dennis Leman – Community Liaison Executive at The PFA, Leigh Bromby and Dominic Poleon

The most prestigious award of the night went to Ross Farrally who picked up The Apprentice of the Year Award for 2013. He said “While it is a great honour to be awarded this trophy, I work with a great bunch of people and any one of them could have won it. This award goes out to every one of them too.” It was a fitting end to an event that celebrated the achievements of a small number of young people representing the hundreds of others who have taken part over the year.

Ryan Hall, David Fell – Deputy Principal at Leeds City College, Ross Farrally and Dominic Poleon

Carl Hopkins, a trustee of the Leeds United Foundation rounded off ceremony reminding the audience that while The Leeds United Foundation is a relatively new organisation, the impact it has on the lives of young people is immense and can only be a positive factor in the development Leeds as a child friendly city.

Last week saw the Leeds United Futsal A-Team crowned champions following the 4-2 victory over Yorkshire rivals Bradford City, clinching the North East League 1 title with two games to spare and twelve points clear of their closet challengers, Hull City. The result also saw the A-Team record their tenth consecutive win of the campaign with only Scunthorpe United and Huddersfield Town left to play.

The Scholars were given a stern test of their League 1 title credentials by Bradford City, but came through to record a hard earned win to seal top spot. Leeds was slow off the mark and conceded within the first 7 minutes of the first half. Leeds took advantage of their “Time-out” in order to regroup and assess the game plan. The Scholars generated few chances leaving Bradford in pole position going in to the break. The break couldn’t come soon enough and stern words from Coaches Rothery and Doone sprung the Scholars into life and within 5 minutes of the restart Leeds were back on level terms with a neat finish by Broadhead. With the game poised to go either way, Leeds began to dominant possession carving out an opening to take the lead with 7 minutes left on the clock. Following the goal by Dobie, the Scholars showed why they sit on top spot with two goals in two minutes from Dobie and Hall making in 4-1. Jamie Broadhead was sent off for a professional foul on 36 minutes following a break away move by Bradford. This left Leeds needing to alter their tactics with the remaining few minutes left to play. Bradford’s extra player proved too much for the Scholars in the dying minutes conceding during open play.

Futsal Coaches Gavin Rothery and Dav Doone

With the clock ticking down, Bradford tried desperately to gain a further advantage with the extra man; however Leeds were resilient in their approach holding out until the final whistle.

This is Leeds’ first title in in as many seasons having joined the Futsal and Education Scholarship in September 2012.

Leeds with go in to The Football League Trust National Finals, held in Birmingham on 6th June as league winners and are hoping to do so unbeaten.

Our unique 2 year course aims to give our students the best opportunity to excel in the classroom, as well as on the pitch.

Students will receive three afternoons of football sessions led by Leeds United UEFA B coaches who will focus on individual levels of fitness, technical and tactical work and the psychological aspects of the game, as well as competing in the British Sports College league and other local cup competitions each week.

For the Females who enroll on the course we have playing opportunities in our Girls Centre of Excellence U17′s team and The Leeds United Ladies Reserve Team and First Team; that players are aspiring to play for. In previous years we have also sent many students on ‘full’ soccer scholarships to study higher education at Universities in America.

The male section has also had many successes over the years winning numerous cups and competitions with many of the players going on to play at higher levels besides gaining places at Universities.

All our students will complete the FA Level 1 Coaching Certificate and other FA qualifications plus other Sports Leadership Awards and the opportunity to gain coaching experience in the community with The Leeds United Foundation.

The programme will start in September 2013 and any young person who is interested in joining should register their interest with Gary Waddington, Football Development Officer, The Leeds United Foundation on 07802 834390 or email gary.waddington@leedsunited.com

Leeds United Ladies FC will, for the first time in its history, play an FA Women’s Premier League tie at Elland Road.

The game against Manchester City Ladies FC will be played at the home of Leeds United FC on Thursday 2nd May and will kick off at 7:45pm.

Fresh from the successful submission of its FA Women’s Super League application, this is the latest positive for the Ladies as they continue to reap the benefits of a working partnership between main club sponsor, Ringways Motor Group, and the Leeds United Foundation.

Leeds Ladies has backed up last season’s League Cup Final appearance and second place Premier League finish with equally impressive results this time round.

The club, which usually plays at Throstle Nest in Farsley, currently lies third in the table with a game in hand and have successfully negotiated their way through to the League Cup Final and were the winners of the County Cup Final against Huddersfield Ladies.

The game at Elland Road promises to be a real battle of the roses with just four points currently separating the team from their Manchester City Ladies Club rivals.

Leeds United Ladies club Chairman Stephen Russell of Ringways Motor Group said: “We can only thank the Board of Directors at Leeds United for the support they’ve shown us in allowing our FA Women’s Premier League game against Manchester City Ladies to be played at Elland Road.

“It will be a very exciting day for Leeds United Ladies FC. When you think of all the greats that have graced the Elland Road pitch it’s amazing to think we now have the chance to write our own chapter in such an illustrious history.”

Tickets to the game are priced at £5 for adults and £2.50 for concessions or children and are available via the club shop ticket office at Leeds United, Elland Road, via the website: www.leedsunited.com or over the telephone on 0871 334 1992. (Calls cost 9p per minute plus network extras.)

A special family ticket which will admit two adults and two children is also available priced only £10.

Chairman Russell hopes it will encourage plenty of new faces to attend the match: “It’s a really exciting time for women’s football in this country and we’re determined to make sure Leeds United Ladies are at the forefront.

“All I can say is that if you’ve never seen a ladies football game before, then bring your friends and family and come down to Elland Road on 2nd May to cheer us on. I promise you won’t be disappointed.”

The Easter holidays has seen 5 young people aged 14-16 years take part in the npower What’s Your Goal? Work Experience Competition at Leeds United. The young winners were involved in four different job roles including Community Coach (x2), Groundsman, Club Shop Manager and Events Manager.

Carla Cantrell, Health Coordinator at The Leeds United Foundation said “The competition provides an invaluable experience for young people that they can reflect on and put on their CV. It also provides them with an opportunity to learn more about themselves as they are asked to identify their own skills and personal qualities and put them into practice within a challenging working environment”.

Feedback received from both the young people and the managers of departments that they were working in was positive, with the young people impressing their respective team leaders. We now hope that the young people take the skills that they have learnt with them into future experiences and situations.
