Shaping the future
The Leeds United Foundation believes that a child’s first interaction with football is invaluable and that it can shape their future participation and life-long love for the game. We also feel that where opportunities are not abundant to an individual, the opportunities that do exist should exceed their hopes and expectations through giving them the opportunity to engage, train, develop and excel.
The Ability Counts Programme delivered by The Leeds United Foundation offers junior players (under the age of 16) a regular opportunity to receive high quality coaching delivered by coaches with a wealth of experience in working with children with a disability. Individually, our coaches come from a range of backgrounds and have a range of qualifications surrounding both football and disability, but when they come together as a ‘coaching team’ we believe the experience and qualifications they hold is unsurpassed.
The sessions themselves consist of a meet and greet, which we believe is essential to forming a friendly, effective player – coach relationship and understanding that can be transferred to the pitch. Once on the Pitch players take part in a warm-up, some fun games and coaching activities before coming together for a game at the end of the session. Players are encouraged to support others and to acknowledge achievement within the group.
The current programme is split into three 10-week blocks with an extended summer break as we realise that this is a key time for families.
